Doctors report about Tofig Yagublu's severe condition

On the 16th day of the hunger strike, the health state of Azerbaijani oppositionist Tofig Yagublu remains severe, and he is on the verge of coma, his attending doctor reports. Activists from among the Azerbaijani intelligentsia called on the country's authorities to release Tofig Yagublu.

With his hunger strike, Tofig Yagublu demands to cancel his conviction and acquit him in the case on disorderly conduct. Even during the trial, the oppositionist claimed that the trial was biased. In response to calls to stop his protest action, Tofig Yagublu repeatedly stated that he would not back down from his demands. The activist called himself a victim of the provocation. Tofig Yagublu asserted that "he would either be released or would die in custody."

"Tofig Yagublu has been continuing his hunger strike for the 16th day, and his condition can be described as severe. His body is extremely exhausted. He is very weak, and he is no longer able to move without other people's help. Yesterday, he underwent a blood transfusion procedure, and his condition stabilized for a while. However, today, he again felt bad, and his blood pressure fell. We do certain medical corrections by injections, of course, but due to the fact that these are just drugs and not nutrients, the effect is very short. In general, his condition is such that he may fall into a coma at any time," doctor Adil Geibulla told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Rustam Ibragimbekov, the chairman of the Cinematographers' Union of Azerbaijan, called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release Tofig Yagublu.

"I appeal to those officials who have enough power to decide the fate of Tofig Yagublu. Please, display your reasonableness, do not take upon yourself the sin of the death of this wonderful person," Rustam Ibragimbekov wrote in his appeal posted on the website of the "Turan" information agency.

MP Sabir Rustamkhanly, People's Poet of Azerbaijan, and Chingiz Abdullaev, Secretary of the Writers' Union of Azerbaijan, also called on to release Tofig Yagublu.
