Azerbaijan claims three casualties in battle on Armenian border

Three soldiers perished and four others were wounded in a fight on the border with Armenia, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported referring to Azerbaijani analysts that a threat local fights remains between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops concentrated in the Karabakh conflict zone. They stressed that the key escalation factor is not the intensity of shootouts on the border but the absence of political progress in conflict settlement.

On July 12, the Armenian Armed Forces "by flagrantly violating the ceasefire in the Tovuz District," shelled the positions of Azerbaijani troops from artillery installations, the Azerbaijani MoD has stated, treating the incident as an Armenia's attempt "to seize the opponent's positions in the Tovuz direction."

The MoD has added that "the enemy's attack was repelled and he retreated, bearing losses."

In her turn, Shushan Stepanyan, the press secretary for the Armenian MoD, has noted in her Facebook page that "all the responsibility for the escalation of the situation is on will fall on the Azerbaijani leadership."
