Resident of Chechnya convicted for trying to join IS

A court in Rostov-on-Don has sentenced a native of Grozny, accused of trying to join in Syria the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court, to seven years in colony.

According to investigators, in March-April 2017, the 26-year-old Islam Ukurov found a man on the Internet, who promised to help him in joining the IS. In May of that year, he arrived in Turkey, tried to cross the Syria border and was detained.

However, Ukurov did not abandon his intent to join militants, and tried to fly to Afghanistan through the Iranian-Afghani border. He flew to Dubai, but on June 3 was detained in Iran and handed over to the Russian law enforcers, the press service of the Southern District Military Court has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that a 27-year-old woman from Chechnya was accused of secretly leaving for Syria several years ago, where she joined one of the IS units. Law enforcers have put her on the wanted list.
