Dagestani benefactors help Azerbaijanis after border closure

The Azerbaijanis who have arrived at the border in the Derbent District had to live in the street for several days, said one of the citizens of Azerbaijan who is waiting to return to his homeland. Dagestani officials and sponsors have incurred the cost of accommodating about 600 Azerbaijanis in hotels and resorts until the border is reopened.

Currently, in the Derbent District, there are about 600 Azerbaijanis, who came from other Russian regions aiming to cross the border closed due to coronavirus.

Elshan Aslanov said that about 600 Azerbaijani citizens had to live in the street for five days, since May 1, waiting for the opening of the corridor on the Russian-Azerbaijani border. According to his story, Russian authorities claim that the issue does not depend on them.

Ruslan Babaev, the owner of the "Ocean" Hotel, said that twenty Azerbaijani citizens had lived in his hotel for free before everyone left for the border.

In Derbent, Azerbaijanis were placed into camps; they are provided with everything necessary, an employee of the city Mayoralty has assured.

The external borders of Azerbaijan will be closed at least until May 31, the operative headquarters under the Cabinet of Ministers has stated. According to an employee of the headquarters, Azerbaijani embassies and consulates, as well as Diasporas, are helping especially needy citizens.
