Chechen village is under tough quarantine after mass commemoration

The self-isolated residents of the village of Novye Atagi in the Shali District are forbidden to go out; police posts are deployed at the entrances to and exits from the village, said the villagers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 9, Magomed Daudov, the Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, reported that quite a lot of people gathered for the funeral of Akhmed Garaev, 80, in the Shali District, despite the authorities' ban. Four members of his family have been preliminarily diagnosed with coronavirus, Mr Daudov has stated, urging the funeral participants to stay at home and turn to medics.

Now, the village of Novye Atagi, where the mass commemoration was held, is under a strict quarantine regime. Police posts were deployed at the entrances and exits to the village; those villagers who are under home quarantine are strictly forbidden to leave their homes, local residents said.

"The measures are very tough. Everyone who was at the funeral in the Garaevs' home was placed under home quarantine. They are forbidden to go out. Food and everything necessary are delivered from aside. No one is allowed in and out. Those who are not under quarantine may leave only to the nearest grocery store, or to the pharmacy. I feel like in a colony, except that there are no prison towers and guards with dogs," Isa, a local resident, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
