Ramzan Kadyrov's demand for price control turns into inspections of shops in Chechnya

Law enforcers inspect shops and markets after Ramzan Kadyrov has ordered to control food prices in Chechnya.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in March, amid the threat of the spread of the coronavirus infection, residents of Chechnya began to massively buy food products with a long shelf life. The authorities called on people not to give in to panic, but people even began to leave for Dagestan for shopping. The increased demand led to the growth of prices in Chechnya.

"Owners of retail outlets were warned about the inadmissibility of overstating prices for basic food products. If an owner violates the above prescription, his outlet will be temporarily closed," the administration for the Chechen leader and government reported.

Some local entrepreneurs expressed their dissatisfaction with such interference in the business. "To sell food products at old prices means working at a loss, because wholesalers also raised prices," says, in particular, Adam, an owner of a retail outlet.

Some local residents approved the fight against the growth of food prices. "Entrepreneurs have taken the advantage of the poor situation of people and raised prices at times," said Lechi, a resident of Grozny.
