Police start investigation against Chechen women evacuated from Syria

Two women who returned from Syria to Chechnya were on the wanted list, and the law enforcement bodies consider the question of their criminal prosecution for involvement in the ranks of militants, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Chechnya reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 10, two women and four children of one of them, aged 3 to 11, were brought to Grozny. All six were evacuated from the Syrian refugee camp of Al-Khol.

"An investigation will be carried out against Zuleikhan Gisaeva and Milana Yangulbaeva ... Both of them secretly left for Syria several years ago, and since then they stayed among members of an illegal armed formation (IAF)," the Chechen MIA reported.

According to the Chechen MIA, about 800 natives of Chechnya left for the conflict zone in the Middle East and joined various terrorist groupings. 724 people were put on the international wanted list.

In 2017, after families of militants returned home from Syria, the Chechen MIA announced that the women returning home would be able to avoid criminal liability for participating in illegal armed formations. However, surrender did not save many Dagestani women returning home from the prosecution. So, in February and March 2018, Zagidat Abakarova and Muslimat Kurbanova, a mother of an infant, were sentenced to eight years of imprisonment in a penal colony.
