"Chernovik" founder tells about interest in articles by arrested journalist Gadjiev

On Monday, February 11, eight persons continued their solo pickets in Makhachkala in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, arrested under the case of financing terrorism. The articles written by him are very popular; they cause authorities' reaction, Magdi Kamalov, the founder of the "Chernovik" (Draft) weekly, has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in Makhachkala, activists are holding pickets every week demanding to stop Gadjiev's criminal prosecution. The latest such action was held in Makhachkala on February 3. On that very day, the journalist's relative and his advocate said that the new investigator in the Gadjiev's case had banned relatives' visits to the arrested journalist for more than a month.

"I think that Djamal Aliev, the Ombudsperson, has visited Abdulmumin in his cell, after reading his publications. Prior to that, Aliev had no idea about the custody conditions in the SIZO (pre-trial prison)," said Mr Kamalov.

In his latest article, Gadjiev wrote about the torture of seven Dagestanis, detained for alleged firearms possession of weapons and participation in an illegal armed formation (IAF).

Let us remind you that well-known Russian journalists have released an appeal in support of Gadjiev. They treated the charges against him as far-fetched and pointed out the danger faced by journalists working in Northern Caucasus.
