Payment issue for treatment of Azerbaijani rights defender Ogtai Gyulyalyev in Turkey resolved

The Geidar Aliev Fund has extended the funding of the treatment of the human rights defender, Ogtai Gyulyalyev, in an Istanbul clinic. If the Fund stops allocating money, the treatment will continue at the expense of international human rights organizations, the Azerbaijani Committee against Torture has stated. Mr Gyulyalyev is still in coma.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the above Geidar Aliev Fund had suggested to transport Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the coordinator of the Committee Against Repressions and Torture, who fell victim to a road accident, from Istanbul to Azerbaijan, where treatment would be cheaper, but Ogtai's relatives said they distrust Azerbaijani doctors.

On October 29, 2019, after a press conference, where Ogtai outlined a plan for a campaign against torture, he was hit down by a car. Oppositionists, rights defenders and advocates suggested that it was done intentionally.

According to Fiuza Gyulyalyeva, Ogtai's wife, he fell into coma, because they operated him on too late in Azerbaijan after the accident.

The international organizations, contacted by the above Committee against Repressions and Torture, promised help, said Mekhman Aliev, a member of the Committee and the director of the "Turan" News Agency.
