Akhsan Nuruzade placed into dungeon

Akhsan Nuruzade, an activist of the "Muslim Unity" movement, was placed into dungeon (punishment cell) after talking to inmates on the Ganja case in the colony. The colony staff is trying to limit contacts of political prisoners, said Ogtai Gyulyalyev, a rights defender.

Mr Nuruzade was placed into dungeon on September 23, Ogtai Gyulyalyev, who is also the coordinator of the Committee against Repression and Torture, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Several convicts under the so-called 'Ganja case' were sent to Colony No. 6 to serve their sentences. Since these people got there for the first time, Akhsan Nuruzade began talking to them, helping to adapt to prison realities. According to Akhsan himself, the colony staff had warned him several times about the inadmissibility of such contacts; however, he continued contacting them," Mr Gyulyalyev has added.

According to his story, in the morning, Nuruzade was first called to the colony boss; and from there he was placed into dungeon. "So far, there is no official information on the reasons for his punishment and the duration of his stay in the punishment cell. We are convinced that he is punished for talking to and helping new prisoners. In jails, they are very wary about contacts among political prisoners, seeing this as some kind of threat to the state order, or simply they want to break these people by restricting their communication," Ogtai Gyulyalyev has concluded.
