Russian-Chechen friendship society closed

On Friday, the Nizhni Novgorod town court liquidated the human rights organization "Russian-Chechen friendship society", reports "Gazeta.Ru". Stanislav Dmitriyevskiy, its co-founder, has already declared that he is going to appeal against the ruling.

Among the grounds for the RCFS liquidation is the uncancelled previous sentence of  Dmitriyevskiy for an "extremist" article, along with the fact that the organization has failed to publicly dissociate from his activity and that he still remains its leader and co-founder.

For reference, on February 3, 2005, Dmitriyevskiy got two years of suspended imprisonment for the publication in the "Pravo-zaschita " newspaper of appeals by Aslan Maskhadov and Akhmed Zakayev, leaders of the unrecognized Chechen Republic of Ichkeriya. Major Russian and international human rights organizations have unanimously assessed the sentence as unfair and politically motivated.
