Rights defenders treat Gadjiev's case as threat to all Russian journalists

Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the "Chernovik" (Draft) weekly, was accused of financing terrorism because of the single publication about the charity of Israil Akhmednabiyev, who was not suspected of anything unlawful at the time of the publication of the article, Vyacheslav Feraposhkin, an employee of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", has stated. If Gadjiev is convicted, the "retroactive force" of the law will be applied to any journalist in Russia, said Magdi Kamalov, the founder of the "Chernovik".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 18, 2019, Abdulmumin Gadjiev, the editor of the religion section of the "Chernovik", was arrested within the case of financing terrorism. He suffered because of his articles on Islamic topics, Magdi Kamalov, the founder of the weekly, is sure. The case is based on the testimony of the only suspect, who does not directly accuse the journalist of committing the crime, the advocate has stated. On August 22, the HRC "Memorial" recognized Gadjiev as a political prisoner and demanded his release.

According to the version of the court, Gadjiev helped in raising funds for militants through the fund of Israil Akhmednabiyev.

The Gadjiev's case was connected with the case of the Moscow journalist, Ivan Golunov, whom they tried to accuse of drug dealing, and who was released amid great public outrage. If all the leading mass media start covering the Gadjiev's case, it will have even a greater resonance, human rights defenders believe.
