Dagestani authorities challenge sanction for rally in support of journalist Gadjiev

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) filed a complaint against the court's decision to sanction a demonstration in support of journalist Abdulmumin Gadjiev in Makhachkala.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 25, in Makhachkala, the court granted a claim filed by organizers of a mass rally in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, a correspondent of the newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft). The refusal of the Dagestani MoJ to sanction the action was recognized as illegal.

On June 18, the editor of the religion department of the newspaper "Chernovik", was arrested in a case on financing of terrorism. On July 23, the court arrested Abubakar Rizvanov, the head of the "Ansar" Charitable Foundation, involved in the same case. Abdulmumin Gadjiev suffered because of posting his articles on Islamic topics, believes Magdi Kamalov, the founder of the "Chernovik".

According to investigators, Abdulmumin Gadjiev transferred money to accounts of the foundations led by preacher Israil Akhmednabiev (Abu Umar Sasitlinsky). The investigators suggest the preacher organized terrorist financing through charitable foundations under the pretext of building mosques and helping low-income Muslims. Israil Akhmednabiev himself claimed he was not familiar with the persons involved in the case.
