Journalist Rashid Maisigov detained in Ingushetia

Law enforcers have detained an oppositional journalist, Rashid Maisigov, and took him away to some unknown place.

On July 12, masked men broke into Maisigov's home; they woke him out of bed; handcuffed him; and began a search. They found a package with some white matter, the detainee's mother has reported.

"Then one of the law enforcers took a pile of papers from the coffee table, which had not been there before; and, as it turned out, these were leaflets about Georgia," the edition named "Fortanga" quotes Maisigov's mother as saying.

The edition suggests that most likely, the leaflets are those, hung around the republic in June; they contained an extremist text with appeals to join Georgia.

Rashid Maisigov collaborated with the "Fortanga", but recently complained about threats received from unknown persons in connection with his work; therefore, he decided to stop his activities about a month ago.

On July 12, law enforcers also detained Zarifa Sautieva, an Ingush activist. She faces arrest under the criminal case on the use of violence against policemen at a rally in Magas, her advocate has explained.

These are the first detentions related to protests after the entry into office of Makhmud-Ali Kalimatov, the acting head of Ingushetia, the "Fortanga" has noted.

"Detentions and arrests continue; Zarifa Sautieva and Rashid Maisigov have been detained. It looks like they want to isolate all those in dissent in order to turn the rest into silent slaves," Magomed Bekov wrote in his Facebook.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
