Court refuses to amend verdict to native of Chechnya convicted for participation in IS

The Supreme Court (SC) of Russia has upheld the sentence to Shamil Soltamuradov, convicted to 17 years in prison for involvement in Syrian militants.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 11, the North-Caucasian District Military Court sentenced Shamil Soltamuradov, a resident of Gudermes, accused of involvement in the activities of the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, in Syria and being trained in its camp, to 17 years in a penal colony.

The defence has appealed against the verdict, but the Criminal Collegium of the Russian SC has Russia also found Soltamuradov guilty and upheld the verdict, the "Interfax" reports.

According to investigators, in October 2014, Soltamuradov left for Syria, where he was trained in the IS camp. From April 2015 to the end of August 2015, Soltamuradov took part in battles against the government army and fulfilled terrorists' instructions, investigators have claimed. He admitted his guilt only partially, stating that he had not undergone training.
