Dagestani authorities reject all applications for actions in support of journalist Gadjiev

Under various pretexts, authorities have refused to sanction any of the seven applied actions in defence of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, a journalist of the "Chernovik" (Draft) weekly; however, attempts to hold a rally in Makhachkala will continue, protest organizers have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 1, the initiative group in support of Gadjiev submitted applications to the Dagestani Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for five meetings and two demonstrations. The actions have been applied for in different places and at different dates, so that to make it more difficult for officials to justify their refusals, supporters of Gadjiev have stated.

Abdulmumin Gadjiev, the editor of the religion section of the Dagestani weekly "Chernovik", has been in custody since June 18, 2019.

The MoJ has already rejected nine applications for the actions in support of Gadjiev, Arsen Magomedov, a lawyer, has noted. According to his story, Dagestani bureaucrats reject any rallies initiated not by the authorities.

They refuse to sanction any actions in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev without proposing alternative venues. This suggests that they would not admit the holding of any such actions, said Idris Yusupov, a journalist.
