Defence to challenge Timur Tumgoev's sentence
The court's verdict in the case against Timur Tumgoev, a native of Vladikavkaz, sentenced on the charge of participation in Syrian militant groupings, is unfair, while his guilt has not been proven, an advocate believes.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 26, the court found Timur Tumgoev, a native of Vladikavkaz, guilty as a member of a grouping of Syrian militants and sentenced him to 18 years of imprisonment in a high-security colony.
According to investigators, in October 2014, Timur Tumgoev went to Georgia, then to Turkey, and from there to Syria, where he joined the militants of the grouping "Djeish al-Muhajirin Wal-Ansar", treated by the prosecution as a be part of the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court. Timur Tumgoev himself has admitted only the fact of his stay in Turkey. Tumgoev was detained in June 2016 at Kharkov Airport, where he had flown from Turkey. In September 2018, Tumgoev was extradited from Ukraine to Russia at the request of the Russia's FSB.
The verdict of the North-Caucasian District Military Court was pronounced in a calm atmosphere, without any disputes, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
Before the pronouncement of the verdict, the defendant again pleaded not guilty and noted that the sentence to him would be unjust.
"Of course, we will appeal against the court's decision," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed after the court hearing by Nelli Levshina, an appointed advocate of Timur Tumgoev.
"Timur Tumgoev pleads not guilty under all the charges ... He states he never participated in activities of any terrorist organization in Syria, he was not a militant, and he never received appropriate training," the advocate stated.
