Nika Meliya accused in case on riots in Tbilisi

Today, officials from the Prosecutor's Office have handed over to a defender of MP Nika Meliya an indictment in the case on organization of group violence during a protest action in Tbilisi. The MP himself did not appear in the Prosecutor's Office.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Nikanor (Nika) Meliya, a member of the parliament from the "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, was suspected of organizing, leading, and participating in group violence during the protest action and was summoned to the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia for indictment.

In Georgia, protest actions are being held daily starting from June 20. The protesters have already succeeded in achieving the resignation of Georgian Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze. In the evening on June 22, protesters voiced three more demands to the authorities: the release of the detainees, the resignation of Interior Minister Giorgi Gakhariya, and the holding of parliamentary elections under a proportional system.

Today, the Chief Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has handed over a two-page indictment to the defender of MP Nika Meliya. One of the document pages lists witnesses in the case.

According to the "UNM" Party, six witnesses in the case are policemen from various regional departments, reports Roman Gotsiridze, the leader of the "United National Movement" Party faction on the air of the "Rustavi-2" TV Company. According to him, there are video records to prove that those people attended the rally together with Nika Meliya, when he was calling for assaulting the parliament building, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reported.

Despite the obligation to appear, Nika Meliya himself has not come to the Prosecutor's Office today. So, the decision on his indictment has been handed over to his advocate.
