Law enforcers interested in attack on female shelter in Makhachkala

In Makhachkala, policemen began investigating a man's attack on the shelter, where his wife, who had suffered from family violence, was hiding with her children.

On May 6, the husband of one of the women, who was hiding in the Makhachkala Motherhood and Childhood Protection Centre "Warm Home on the Mountain" from domestic violence, came to the shelter and demanded to opened the door for him, Evgenia Velichkina, Director of the Centre, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today.

"Our female employees were afraid to let him in and didn't open the door. There were only women in the shelter, and there was no one to protect them. The man broke the front door; his wife and an employee [of the shelter] hid in the room and held the door. He opened the room with children and called them. Two older children ran out to him, but the third child, a three-year-old girl, fell into a stupor and could not move. He took two children and left," Ms Velichkina told, adding that the man threatened his wife and the employees.

Immediately after the incident, employees of the shelter appealed to the police, where they were told that they would be able to deal with this "after the May holidays," said Evgenia Velichkina. "We were going to write an application to the Prosecutor's Office about the policemen's inaction. But before that we turned to the journalists whom we knew. They, in turn, started calling the Dagestani Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). And practically at once a police official contacted us, clarified all the information, and on the same day an investigator arrived," said the woman.

The police official told that the man was a figurant of two criminal cases, of arson of a car and penetration another's housing; and on May 14, the court should consider his compulsory treatment at a specialized clinic.
