Relatives demand to release those accused for riots in Ganja

At a rally in the city of Ganja, family members of those arrested in connection with the July 2018 events have demanded to release them.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 30, the Centre for the Protection of Political Prisoners organized, at the headquarters of the "Musavat" Party, a discussion on the "Ganja case" with the participation of relatives of those arrested, who reported that the detainees had been tortured.

On July 3, 2018, there was an assassination attempt on Elmar Veliev, the head of the Ganja administration. Yunis Safarov, a 35-year-old native of Ganja, was detained. On July 10, in Ganja, about 200 people gathered outside the administration building and demanded to investigate the actions of Elmar Veliev. The police dispersed the rally. Two police officers were killed in clashes with the protesters.

On April 22, family members of those arrested held a protest action in front of the building of the city's executive power in Ganja, the "Turan" News Agency has reported.

The relatives demanded to release their arrested children, as they treat the arrests as illegal. They claim that their children had been exposed to cruel torture and insults. "We'll not be silent; and our voice will be heard everywhere," the agency quotes the protesters' statement.

Policemen demanded from the rally to disperse, stating that in case of disagreement, they could file a complaint to the prosecutor's office or the appellate court.

The policemen took away portraits of the arrested children from the parents; but nobody was detained, the "Minval.az" reports.
