Man accused of assaulting Pskov paratroopers in Chechnya sentenced to 16 years in jail

Shamil Kazbulatov, a resident of the Stavropol Territory, was found guilty of encroaching on the life of servicemen as a member of the gang of Basaev and Khattab in Chechnya, and sentenced to 16 years in a high security colony, the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) reported on April 22.

At night on March 1, 2000, the fighters of the 6th parachute assault company of the 104th regiment of the 76th Pskov Airborne Division engaged in combat, in the vicinity of the Chechen village of Ulus-Kert with a regiment headed by the field commanders, Shamil Basaev and Khattab. 84 out of 90 Russian soldiers, including 13 officers, were killed; four others were wounded. The militants' losses amounted to 370 fighters.

The court has found that on February 29, 2000, Kazbulatov, being a member of the Basaev and Khattab gang took part in the attack on the servicemen of the Pskov Airborne Division in the Shatoi District of Chechnya.

The Shatoi District Court has found Kazbulatov guilty under Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (encroachment on the life of military servicemen) and sentenced him to 16 years in a high security correctional colony, says the website of the ICRF.
