Speaker of Chechen Parliament makes loud statement on territorial dispute with Ingushetia

Magomed Daudov, Speaker of the Chechen Parliament, has criticized the Ingush opposition and urged the former head of Ingushetia, Ruslan Aushev, to tell about the demarcation of territories. Daudov's statement was the first loud statement by the Chechen authorities since the start of a new wave of protests in Ingushetia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the signing on September 26, 2018, by Ramzan Kadyrov and Yunus-Bek Evkurov of the agreement on the Chechen-Ingush border caused mass protests in Ingushetia in the autumn of 2018. Protests continued in March this year.

The agreement has failed to resolve, but only stirred up a long-standing dispute over the border of the two republics. The authorities of Chechnya believe that the disputed lands had always belonged to Chechnya.

According to a Chechen political analyst, the absence of any active reaction of Chechen authorities to the second wave of rallies in Ingushetia has to do with the fact that they are sure that protests will give no fruit.

The analyst has added that during the first wave of protests in Ingushetia, the Chechen authorities had fears that the actions could change the attitude of the Russian federal authorities to this issue, but now there are no such fears.

Ruslan Kutaev, the head of the Assembly of Caucasian Nations, has linked the absence of any active reaction of Chechen authorities to the second wave of protests in Ingushetia with the changed content of protesters' demands – now, the main one is Evkurov's resignation.
