Ingush activists re-apply for referendum on border with Chechnya

A repeated application has been submitted to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Ingushetia for registration of an initiative group to hold a referendum on the issue of the border with Chechnya. This was announced by Magomed Mutsolgov, a rights defender, who chaired the sitting of the initiative group.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 6, 2018, the Ingush CEC refused to register such a group of Ingush activists, who demanded to hold a referendum on the border with Chechnya. In its response, the CEC referred to some formal violations.

If the CEC makes a positive decision, the initiators of the referendum will be given time to collect signatures of residents of the republic, said Magomed Mutsolgov, who is also the head of the "Mashr" human rights organization. "This is a very long and difficult path, but it's important for us to go through it, because only the people themselves are defending their own interests," he has stressed.

Let us remind you that the signing on September 26, 2018, by Ramzan Kadyrov and Yunus-Bek Evkurov of the agreement on the Chechen-Ingush border led to mass protests in Ingushetia. On December 6, 2018, the Constitutional Court (CC) of Russia found the agreement compliant with the Russian Constitution.
