Georgian authorities demand to investigate man's death on border with Abkhazia

On March 10, Georgian citizen Irakli Kvaratskheliya committed suicide after being detained while trying to cross the border with Abkhazia. According to eyewitnesses, Irakli Kvaratskheliya was beaten after his detention.

On March 10, Irakli Kvaratskheliya was detained for illegally crossing the border with Georgia, the State Security Service of Abkhazia reports today. Irakli Kvaratskheliya was taken to a unit of the Border Guard Service of the Russian FSB in Abkhazia. "Being alone in the office, he committed suicide," reports the website of the Abkhazian State Security Service.

It states that the forensic medical examination bureau of the Ministry for Public Health of Abkhazia confirmed the non-violent nature of the man's death. The investigation into the circumstances of the incident is being carried out by the authorities of the Russian Federation, and the issue of transferring the Irakli Kvaratskheliya's body to the Georgian side is under consideration, the Abkhazian State Security Service reports.

Today, Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality in Georgia, has stated that the Georgian authorities will investigate the circumstances of the death of 29-year-old Irakli Kvaratskheliya.

According to residents of the Nabakevi village, Irakli Kvaratskheliya was beaten during his detention, the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel reports.
