US Congress approves idea of sanctions for Boris Nemtsov's murder

On March 7, the US Congress Committee approved a resolution calling for the investigation into the murder of the oppositional politician Boris Nemtsov and to impose sanctions against those who were involved in it. The congressmen also offered to study the foreign business assets of the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Boris Nemtsov was shot dead in Moscow on February 27, 2015. On July 13, 2017, five natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia were convicted within the case of his murder. Advocates of his family stated that the crime was not solved, since its organizers and customers are still at large.

According to the TASS, the resolution was brought into the Congress in late February in connection with the fourth anniversary of Nemtsov's murder. Its authors called on the US government "to keep raising the issue of Nemtsov's murder during any contacts with the Russian government and emphasize the need to bring customers and performers to justice." The document also calls upon the Russian government to "conduct an independent international investigation into the murder of Nemtsov with the assistance of the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE)."

Resolutions of the Houses of the US Congress are not legally binding and are recommendations in nature.

Vadim Prokhorov, an advocate of Zhanna Nemtsova, Boris' daughter, said that he "fully approves" the resolution of the US Congress, the "Echo Moskvy" reports.
