Dagestan: in 2018, count of victims of armed conflict dropped by almost 11%

In 2018, at least 49 people fell victim to the conflict in Dagestan – like in 2017, most casualties were among militants. The count of victims among law enforcers and civilians has decreased. The total number of victims, as compared with 2017, decreased by 10.9%. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on the data collected by our own correspondents and information from open sources.

Armed incidents

January-December 2018

In 2018, Dagestan fixed 17 armed incidents, during which 48 people suffered: 35 perished and 13 were wounded.

The death toll includes 27 alleged militants, 3 law enforcers and 5 civilians; 11 law enforcers and two civilians were wounded.

January-December 2017

In 2017, Dagestan registered 24 armed incidents, in the course of which 51 people suffered: 44 perished and 7 were wounded.

The death toll included 38 alleged militants, 5 law enforcers and one civilian; five law enforcers, one civilian and one militant were wounded.

Thus, in 2018, the number of armed incidents in Dagestan decreased by 29% compared with 2017. The number of victims decreased by 5.9%.

Explosions and terror acts

In 2018, in Dagestan, one explosion and one terror act were committed.

The explosion occurred at night on May 8 in the Dagestani village of Chirkei, a room for ziyarat near the grave of Sheikh Said of Chirkei was blown up. As a result of the explosion, no one was hurt.

The attack in Kizlyar was considered a terror act: on February 18, during the Shrovetide holiday, a 23-year-old local man opened fire on people. As a result, four people were shot dead, three others were wounded. At the detention attempt, the attacker wounded two law enforcers and was killed. Later, one of the civilians, a woman, died in hospital. Thus, as a result of the terror act, eight people suffered – six were killed and two – wounded.

January-December 2017

In 2017, six explosions took place in Dagestan, including one terror act: three people fell victim to them: two were killed and one was wounded. Two civilians were killed and one was wounded.

In 2018, the total number of explosions triggered in the territory of Dagestan, compared with 2017, decreased six-fold or by 83.3%; the number of terror acts remained the same; but the number of victims increased by 166.6% - from three to eight people.

Year outcomes: 75% of 2018 casualties were militants

In total, according to the "Caucasian Knot", in 2018, 49 people fell victim to the armed conflict in Dagestan, of which 36 people were killed and 13 were wounded.

In 2018, the armed struggle of law enforcers with militants resulted in eight civilian victims, of which at least six people perished and two were wounded. The losses of the armed underground in 2018 amounted to 27 casualties. In 2018, as a result of shelling attacks and armed clashes, 3 law enforcers were killed, 11 others were wounded, that is, 14 law enforcers suffered in total.

In 2017, 55 people fell victim to the conflict in Dagestan, of whom 47 people perished and eight were wounded. Six victims were among the civilian population; at least four of them died and two were wounded. The losses of the armed underground in 2017 amounted to 38 casualties; one was wounded during detention. In 2017, 10 law enforcers suffered: five were killed in shelling attacks and armed clashes, five others were wounded.

As compared with 2017, in 2018, the number of civilian victims in Dagestan went up by 33.3%; the number of victims among militants decreased by 30.8%. The number of victims among law enforcers increased by 40%.

In 2018, the total number of victims of the armed conflict in Dagestan (49 people: 36 dead and 13 wounded), as compared with 2017, when at least 55 people fell victim to the conflict: 47 dead and eight wounded) decreased by 10.9%.

The number of armed incidents and the number of explosions went down, while the number of terror acts remained the same.

Statistics shows that the majority, 75%, of all those killed in the conflict in Dagestan were counted as militants (27 deaths out of 36 in total). In 2017, this figure was 81%. In 2016, the main losses were also among militants.

The provided statistics cannot reflect the number of victims with the 100 percent accuracy. Not all information is included in the news reports. It is not always possible to check the reliability of the statements voiced by the law enforcement bodies. Besides, new facts about the events of the reporting period become often known after the statistics had been already published on the "Caucasian Knot".
