Azerbaijani activist Guseinov stops his dry hunger strike

On the fifth day of his dry hunger strike, after his health condition has deteriorated, Mekhman Guseinov, an Azerbaijani blogger, began drinking water in custody, his brother has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mekhman Guseinov, who went on a hunger strike, was transferred from the colony to the Baku SIZO (pre-trial prison) in connection with the new criminal case, initiated against him, his advocate reported on December 31.

On March 3, 2017, Mekhman Guseinov was sentenced to two years in prison on charges of slander, because he had declared torture after his detention. On December 26, the country's Penitentiary Service stated that two months before the end of his prison term, Guseinov was trying to prevent a search and beat up a prison employee. Human rights defenders believe that a new case has been brought against Guseinov out of revenge for his statements. On December 26, Guseinov was placed into a dungeon (punishment cell), where he went on a hunger strike.

On December 30, after his transfer to the SIZO, Mekhman Guseinov stopped his dry hunger strike, Emin Guseinov, Mekhman's brother and the Executive Director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Last night (on December 30), we spoke with Mekhman on the phone. On the fifth day of his dry hunger strike, Mekhman felt very bad. They called doctors to him, who made some injections for Mekhman to come to his senses," Emin Guseinov said.

According to his story, he has persuaded his brother to stop the dry hunger strike.
