Resident of Chechnya charged with Basaev's raid on Dagestan

The case of the resident of Chechnya, whom investigators treat as a participant in the attack of the militants of Shamil Basaev and Khattab on Dagestan in 1999, has been sent to the court, the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) has reported.

On August 7, 1999, more than a thousand armed militants from Chechnya under the command of Shamil Basaev and the Jordanian Amir Khattab invaded Dagestan, where fights continued for over a month. On September 15, 1999, the Russian Minister of Defence reported that the territory of Dagestan was completely liberated.

According to investigators, the resident of Chechnya took part in an armed rebellion in the Novolak District of Dagestan. As a result of the battle, where the defendant took part, a military was killed and three others were wounded, investigators have found out.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this August, the case of four residents of the Stavropol Territory, who were also accused of attacking Dagestan in 1999 as members of the militant groupings under the command of Basaev and Khattab, was also sent to the court.
