In 2017, in Chechnya, number of victims to armed conflict increased by 74%

In 2017, in Chechnya, at least 50 people fell victims to the armed conflict. According to the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta", other 25 civilians were executed without trial. Thus, in the past year, according to the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" and the data of the "Novaya Gazeta", in total, in Chechnya, 75 victims fell victim to the armed. In comparison with 2016, the total number of victims increased by 74%.

As a rule, the main indicator of the intensity of an armed conflict is the number of victims killed and wounded people during armed clashes and armed incidents, as well as bombings and terror acts. However, the very number of such cases is no less important and informative.

The "Caucasian Knot" provides the information on the number of armed incidents, terror acts, and bombings in the regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) in 2017 compared with the number of similar incidents in 2016.

Armed incidents

January-December 2017

In 2017, in the Chechen Republic, 8 armed incidents were registered, to which at least 40 people fell victim, including 31 killed and 9 injured. The death toll included 19 suspected members of the illegal armed formations (IAFs), 11 law enforcers and one civilian. The number of the wounded included seven law enforcers and two civilians.

In January, four armed incidents occurred. As a result of an armed clash in the village of Tsotsi-Yurt, four militants and two law enforcers were killed. In a police department in Grozny, a detainee suspected of involvement in the armed underground injured four policemen. The attacker was killed, and one of the wounded law policemen died several days later in the hospital. As a result of an attack on policemen in Shali, two policemen were killed. Three attackers were killed, and two civilians were wounded. Besides, also in January, a law enforcer suspected of having connections with militants committed suicide after his detention.

In March, two armed incidents were registered. As a result of an attack on a base of the National Guard of Russia in the Naur District committed by members of the armed underground, six law enforcers were killed, and three others were wounded. In the course of the armed clash, as well as during a special operation conducted in the Urus-Martan District, eight suspected members of the armed underground were killed.

In August, as a result of an attack committed by unidentified persons, an MP (a civilian) was killed. On November 19, in an attack on a police checkpoint located near the village of Roshni-Chu in the Urus-Martan District, two suspected members of the armed underground were killed.

January-December 2016

In 2016, in the Chechen Republic, six armed incidents were registered, to which at least 31 people fell victim. Of them, 23 were killed and 8 others were wounded. The death toll included 18 suspected IAF members and 5 law enforcers. The number of the wounded people included 5 law enforcers, 2 suspected militants, and a civilian.
