Advocate appeals against the arrest of Azerbaijani oppositionist Mamed Ibragim

Javad Javadov, an advocate, who has joined the defence of Mamed Ibragim, an adviser to the chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has filed a complaint against the arrest of his client. The defence asks the court to release Ibragim for the period of the investigation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 27, two days before the end of Ibragim's prison term in the case of beating a man, he was placed into the dungeon (a punishment cell). The Penitentiary Service announced that he was punished for a knife found in the Ibragim's cell under the pillow of his bed. In protest, Mamed went on a hunger strike.

Mamed Ibragim was detained on September 30, 2015, on the complaint of Mikhail Guliev, who claimed that Ibragim had beaten him up. On March 15, 2016, the court sentenced him to three years in prison for hooliganism. Ibragim was put on the list of Azerbaijani political prisoners.

The family of Mamed Ibragim attracted Javad Javadov, a well-known Azerbaijani advocate, to defend Ibragim's rights.

Mr Javadov has noted that Ibragim was not allowed to contact his family and invite a lawyer of his choice; and this is a gross violation of his rights.

The PFPA believes that the new criminal case was fabricated in order to prolong Ibragim's stay in prison.

“No sane person would believe that a prisoner would have kept a knife on himself two days before his release. This is absurd," Ilham Gusein, a board member of the PFPA, has stated.
