Archpriest Mamaladze asks Georgia's President for pardon

Giorgi Mamaladze, sentenced to nine years in prison for an attempt to poison the Patriarch's Secretary, has asked the Georgian President to pardon him; however, he refuses to plead guilty.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 5, 2017, the court found Mamaladze guilty of preparing the murder of the secretary of the Georgian Patriarch and illegal possession of weapons.

According to the prosecutor's version, Deacon Giorgi Mamaladze, the deputy head of the property management service of the Patriarchate, had planned to poison a "high-ranking clergyman" with sodium cyanide. Some clergymen doubted this version.

"The pardoning petition deals with his personality, worsening health and those circumstances, on the basis of which the President should pardon him," Giorgi Pantsulaya, an advocate, has stated.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
