Dagestani journalists: custom of shooting at weddings go back into past

In recent years, they open fire at weddings in Dagestan less frequent; this tradition may disappear, local mass media write. However, in social networks, residents of the region protect this custom, refusing to treat it as wild.

Shooting at Caucasian wedding parties is not a historical custom, although it is widespread, the scientist Magomedkhan Magomedkhanov asserts.

The shooting at weddings is still practiced in some villages of Dagestan; it spread to cities along with mountaineers' migration to the plain, Milrad Fatullaev, the editor-in-chief of the RIA "Derbent", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. They shot on two occasions: when the wedding procession was going to the bride's house, and after the first wedding night, notifying that the bride was a virgin.

In Mr Fatullaev's opinion, the tradition of shooting at weddings can not be preserved in the realities of modern Dagestani cities.

Shooting at a wedding is a disgraceful display of disrespect for the owners of the wedding, Magomed Magomedov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik", believes.

Some social network users react positively to the custom. "It's okay; weapons have long been part of our life!" Vagab Abdusalamov wrote in the Facebook. At the same time commentators with Russian surnames treat the custom as savagery.
