Oyub Titiev's defence in Chechnya has chance to prove case falsification

The Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya has satisfied the complaint of the defence of Oyub Titiev, the head of the Grozny office of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" asking to check the records of bout the examination of the DVRs (digital video recorders) installed along the Oyub's path on the day of his detention. The check can prove the destruction of video records and confirm the falsification of the charges, Pyotr Zaikin, an advocate, has suggested.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 19, the trial of Oyub Titiev started. Seven prosecution witnesses-policemen gave very similar testimonies, without telling anything about Titiev's detention on January 9.

Since January 11, Titiev is under arrest on charges of possessing marijuana. He keeps insisting that the drug was planted on him by a law enforcer and would not plead guilty.

On June 25, the Staropromyslovsky Court of Grozny refused to consider Pyotr Zaikin's complaint about the investigators' refusal to appoint a computer-technical examination of DVRs' records along Titiev's route.

According to the defence's version, on Titiev's detention day he was brought twice to the police station. According to his advocates, it is the very fact of repeated delivery to the police station proves the fact of falsification. Investigators assert that video cameras installed in the police station did not work on that day.

"Now, we have a chance to prove that law enforcement agents had falsified the materials of the criminal case, and that all the evidence confirming the Oyub's words that he was detained twice and the drug was planted on him were deleted," Pyotr Zaikin told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
