Chechen Prosecutor accuses traders of inflating prices ahead of Eid al-Fitr

More than 100 cases of increasing foodstuff prices on the eve of the Uraza-Bayram holiday were revealed by the Chechen Prosecutor's Office.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that residents of Chechnya had complained about a sharp rise in foodstuff prices on the eve of the Eid al-Fitr. Theologians have stated that raising prices before the holiday is inadmissible, indicating that Muslim countries have a tradition "to cut prices during the Ramadan and before the Eid al-Fitr." On June 3, WhatsApp users in Chechnya spread the message of Salakh-Haji Mezhiev, the republic's Mufti with a call not to raise prices. However, the theologians' persuasions had no effect on traders, local residents assert.

After residents' complaints, the Chechen Prosecutor's Office organized inspections in stores and marketplaces and revealed 101 cases of unreasonable increase in foodstuff prices, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by a source from the Prosecutor's Office today.

"We inspected the prices in marketplaces and food stores after media reports about unjustified price increase. During the inspections, we revealed 101 case violating trading rules and misleading customers, "said the source, adding that all the materials about violations have been sent to "Rospotrebnadzor" bodies.
