Residents of Chechnya complain about price rise on eve of end of Ramadan fasting

Despite the fact that the exact date for the end of Ramadan fasting has not been defined, Chechnya has seen the growth of prices on juices, meat, and butter by 10-25 roubles, local residents have stated.

"There are 10-12 days left until the end of Ramadan; people are already preparing for the Uraza-Bayram holiday; and prices have started to grow in marketplaces and shops. Usually we, like many others, buy juices and other foodstuffs in advance, so that to have less burden during the last days. We buy what we can store for long to save some money; however, sellers have apparently understood this, and they increase prices in advance," Roza, a resident of Grozny, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Tamara, another resident of Grozny, has confirmed the growth of prices. "A 100-gram pack of butter now costs 75 roubles, instead of earlier 50. Juices, some fruits, cereals are now more expensive, meat has grown by 10 roubles per kilo a month ago," she said.

At the same time, Grozny residents note that some retail outlets have not yet raised prices for foodstuffs. "It's better to buy food from suppliers or at wholesale stores. I know a few places in the city, where prices remain at the same level. Every year, before the Uraza-Bayram, this happens – sellers inflate prices aiming to get maximum profits," said Salam, a Grozny resident.
