Georgia's Chief Prosecutor resigns at the background of protests

Irakli Shotadze has decided to leave the post of the Chief Prosecutor of Georgia after an unacceptable, in his opinion, decision of the court, which has partially acquitted the persons accused of killing two schoolchildren in Tbilisi.

Today, a Tbilisi court has acquitted one of the defendants, accused killing the schoolboys. Relatives of the dead children demanded that Irakli Shotadze, the Chief Prosecutor of Georgia, be brought to justice, but he also promised to appeal against the verdict.

On December 1, 2017, as a result of a fight, two teenagers were stabbed at a school in Tbilisi and died. Two other teenagers were accused of killing them.

"It is especially important for me that fair justice deals with murders of minors," Mr Shotadze said, as reported by the press service of the Georgian General Prosecutor's Office (GPO).

He expressed his condolences to the families of perished teenagers and noted that "he did everything to bring the criminals to liability," the JAMnews reports.

On Thursday, about a hundred people gathered near the building of the GPO, including relatives of the murdered teenagers. They demanded a fair trial.
