Armen Sargsyan elected Armenian President

Following the secret voting of delegates of the Armenian Parliament, Armen Sargsyan, nominated by the ruling coalition, has been elected by the majority of votes.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Armen Sargsyan, Armenian Ambassador to Great Britain and Northern Ireland, was registered to run for presidency as a candidate from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia. MP Artak Zeinalyan, whose candidacy was proposed by the faction "Elk", failed to obtain the necessary number of votes to be nominated as a presidential candidate.

The election of the fourth president of Armenia has been completed. The voting took place from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. local time in a lobby in front of the parliament hall, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The results of the voting were announced at the very meeting of the Parliament. According to Gagik Melikyan, the chair of the counting commission, out of 105 MPs, 101 persons took part in the voting. 90 MPs voted for Armen Sargsyan. 10 MPs voted against him. One ballot was declared invalid.

Armen Sargsyan, who is elected by the Parliament, will take office after the completion of the term of the Serzh Sargsyan's presidency, on April 9. Meanwhile, in connection with the constitutional changes, the first person of the country will then not be the President, but the Prime Minister.
