Kizlyar authorities report desecration of monument to 1996 terror act victims

The memorial to victims of the attack of Chechen militants led by Salman Raduev on Kizlyar was stained with mud, and vandals left a dead crow among the flowers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 9, 1996, militants led by Chechen commanders Salman Raduev, Khunkar-Pashi Israpilov and Turpal-Ali Atgeriev attacked the Dagestani city of Kizlyar.

As a result, about 70 people were killed; more than a hundred were wounded.

As reported by the administration of Kizlyar with reference to the TBS TV filming crew, unidentified vandals made inscriptions and wrote symbols on the bas-relief in the form of a woman's face.

Sergey Goncharov, the deputy head of the administration for security, has linked the act of vandalism with the upcoming presidential election. "Destructive forces in the city are trying to shake the situation, to show that the authorities are allegedly unable to cope with their tasks," the press service of the administration has cited him as saying.
