Russian citizen claims spending a year in slavery in Abkhazia

When detained by border guards near the Psou River, a man claimed he fled from slavery in Abkhazia.

A Russian citizen was detained near the village of Nizhnyaya Shilovka. Border guards noticed him when he waded the Psou River and entered the Russian shore.

The detainee claims he was kept for a year as a slave by residents of Abkhazia. According to the man, they seized his passport and forced him to work at a construction site. The man escaped due to help of local residents, the "Yuga.ru" reports with reference to the Border Guard Service of the Russian FSB Department for the Krasnodar Territory.

An institution of a criminal case for illegal border crossing is under consideration, the EFKATE TV Channel reports.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" has reported about a case of slavery in another region of Southern Caucasus. In August 2017, investigators reported that an Armenian citizen fell victim to human trafficking in Georgia. According to the investigators, in 2003, the man was looking for job in Georgia, but fell into slavery to a family in one of the villages in Armenia.
