Georgia sentences Mikhail Saakashvili to three years of imprisonment

The Georgian Court has found former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili guilty of abuse of power when pardoning the persons sentenced in the case on murder of businessman Sandro Girgvliani.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 13, advocate David Kakoishvili announced that Mikhail Saakashvili who stayed in Ukraine refused to participate in the court proceedings in Georgia.

According to investigators, when pardoning the persons sentenced for killing businessman Sandro Girgvliani, Mikhail Saakashvili ignored the Pardoning Commission.

Today, the judge of the Tbilisi City Court has announced the decision in the case.

The Court has found Mikhail Saakashvili guilty and sentenced him to four years of imprisonment. However, as a result of the amnesty, the sentence has been reduced to 3 years, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports with reference to the "Georgian Public Broadcasting".

Till present, no comments of the former Georgian President or his representatives on the Court's decision are available. However, earlier, Mikhail Saakashvili has stated he treats his criminal prosecution in the homeland as of political nature.
