UNM threatens with protests against Saakashvili's extradition

The Georgian oppositional party "United National Movement" (UNM) has switched to an emergency working mode in connection with an attempt to detain Mikhail Saakashvili in Kiev, and declared its readiness to protest against his extradition from Ukraine.

On December 5, law enforcers who searched a Mikhail Saakashvili's apartment in Kiev detained him, despite the protests of his supporters. However, the supporters of the former Georgian President appeared to be able to take him away from the law enforcers. Mikhail Saakashvili called on people for a protest against Ukrainian President Poroshenko.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 6, UNM activists marched across Tbilisi, protesting against the actions of the Ukrainian authorities and law enforcers against former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.

"The UNM has switched to the emergency working regime in connection with the attempt to detain Saakashvili, which we consider illegal," Giorgi Baramidze, one of the party's leaders, told the "Caucasian Knot". "During the detention, no official documents were presented, and no advocates were allowed," Mr Baramidze said, adding that law enforcers' actions are backed by a conspiracy of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling "Georgian Dream-Democratic Movement" Party.

According to Mr Baramidze, the UNM intends to resort to every action permitted by the Constitution, including protest ones.
