Mikhail Saakashvili refused asylum in Ukraine

The State Migration Service of Ukraine has denied Mikhail Saakashvili a refugee status, and therefore, there are no obstacles for his extradition any more. This was announced by the General Prosecutor of Ukraine. Mikhail Saakashvili himself claims he has not received a refusal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mikhail Saakashvili lost his Ukrainian citizenship in July. However, on September 10, he returned to the country by breaking through the border between Poland and Ukraine. On October 11, the former President of Georgia requested asylum in Ukraine.

In his homeland, the former Georgian President has been accused of several crimes, including embezzlement of state funds and abuse of office.

Today, at a briefing held in Kiev, Ukrainian General Prosecutor Yuri Lutsenko has said that Mikhail Saakashvili has not appealed against the decision of the State Migration Service of Ukraine on the refusal of asylum, and now he is a stateless person.

"The State Migration Service, to where Mikhail Saakashvili filed his application, denied him refugee status. Mr Saakashvili has not appealed to court against the decision. So, now he is a stateless person without any special circumstances to exclude his deportation or extradition," reported Yuri Lutsenko as quoted by the "112.ua".

Mikhail Saakashvili himself has denied the Yuri Lutsenko's statement and said he did not get any documents from the State Migration Service of Ukraine.
