Ramzan Kadyrov's nephew heads Chechen road police

On October 9, Idris Cherkhigov, a 28-year-old nephew of the Chechen leader, was appointed the chief for the Chechen department of the road police (known as GIBDD). This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by an official from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) for Chechnya.

Idris Cherkhigov is a son of Zargan Kadyrova, a sister of the leader of Chechnya, who is the Ramzan Kadyrov's aide in matters of pre-school education. Ramzan Cherkhigov, the father of Idris Cherkhigov, is the Chechen Minister for Transport and Communication.

"The chief of the Chechen GIBDD Department is one of the most 'beneficial' positions in the republic. And Ramzan Kadyrov has appointed to it his nephew who had not worked even for a day in the GIBDD system," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has been told today by a leader of a local NGO who preferred to remain anonymous.

When appointing a person to any top-ranking position in Chechnya, the authorities of the republic give preference not to professionals, but to relatives and fellow villagers of the Chechen leader. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Aslanbek, a member of another NGO. "It is enough to look at the recent appointments and to analyze who holds most of the leading positions in our country. This kind of vertical power is not viable in the long term and it will fail sooner or later," the NGO member suggested.
