Journalist Afghan Sadygov placed into dungeon for 15 days

Azerbaijani journalist Afghan Sadygov was placed to the dungeon (punishment cell) after he had complained about violation of his rights in a penal colony, his wife has reported today. Officials from the Penitentiary Service claim the prisoner was rude towards warders.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Afghan Sadygov, the founder and editor of the socio-political website "Azel.tv", was accused of attacking a woman. According to investigators, the attack took place at a reception room of the head for the Jalilabad District. Relatives of the journalist treated his prosecution a punishment for criticizing the district authorities. On January 12, the court sentenced Afghan Sadygov to 2.5 years of imprisonment.

Afghan Sadygov is included in the list of 167 political prisoners released on January 27 by the Centre for the Protection of Political Prisoners.

Afghan Sadygov has been placed to a punishment cell for 15 days. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Savanj Sadygova, the journalist's wife. "Afghan sent his notes to the media for publication. That time, warders tried to take the notes away from him. And Afghan, in order not to give his notes, swallowed the paper. After that, he was placed to the punishment cell for 15 days," the woman said.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has got a confirmation from the PR Department of the Penitentiary Service that the journalist had been placed to the punishment cell. "Afghan Sadygov was placed to the punishment cell, since he violated the rules of internal discipline and was rude to the staff members of the penal colony," said an official from the Penitentiary Service.
