Kadyrov demands more subsidies for Chechnya

The amount of subsidies allocated to the republic should be increased taking into account the high birth rate in Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that financial help to Chechnya is allocated according to a special scheme, not applied to other Russian regions: the Ministry of Finance allocates subsidies based on the expenditures of the Chechen budget, Anton Siluanov the Russian Finance Minister, said in June. In 2017, subsidies to Chechnya from the federal budget remained at the level of 2016 and amounted to 40.4 billion roubles.

According to Kadyrov, he has discussed possible increased subsidies to Chechnya with Dmitry Kozak, Russian Deputy Prime Minister. "Dmitry Nikolayevich has assured that comprehensive support and help would be provided," Kadyrov said.

He justified the need to increase subsidies by the fact that the federal centre should take into account the "high birth rate in Chechnya."

However, according to the “Rosstat” (Russian Statistics Agency), in January-August 2017, in Chechnya, only 0.3% children more were born during the same period of 2016.

In January 2017, Maxim Topilin, Russian Minister of Labour, also drew attention to the decline in the Chechnya’s birth rate. "I want to draw your attention to the fact that in Ingushetia, Chechnya and Dagestan, we see a decrease of birth rate," the RIA “Novosti” quotes Mr Topilin as saying.
