On August 28-September 3, eight people fell victim to North-Caucasian conflict

During the week from August 28 to September 3, 2017, in the course of the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus, eight persons suffered; of them, seven perished, and one was wounded. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The casualties include three law enforcers and four alleged members of the armed underground, all of them – in Dagestan.

Attacks on law enforcers

On August 28, in the morning, at a fuelling station in Makhachkalinskaya Street in the city of Kaspiysk, unidentified attackers stabbed two policemen – one of them died, the other was hospitalized. Two attackers were killed and pre-identified as Islam Abusalimov and Islam Polatov, both 19 years old, workers of a craft shop. One of them was on the prophylactic registry of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (NIA) as a supporter of radical viewpoints. On August 29, another Kaspiysk resident was detained on suspicion of involvement in the above attack. The "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia, claimed responsibility for the attack on policemen.

Special and counterterrorist operations

On August 28, in the dwelling settlement of Balyurt, located in an outskirt of the city of Khasavyurt, during a counterterrorist operation (CTO), power agents found alleged militants from the so-called “Khasavyurt” grouping. Armed people were blocked in a private house; and in response to the proposal to lay down their arms and surrender, they opened fire. Two law enforcers and two alleged militants were killed in a shootout. In the CTO venue, law enforcers found automatic firearms, ammunition and grenades. The killed FSB officers, Denis Rakitsky and Alexander Baibutlov, before the accession of the Crimea to Russia, served at the Centre for Special Operations of the Security Service of Ukraine.
