Tsagareli, Avksenty Antonovich

Famous Georgian dramatist.

Born February 9 (21), 1857, in the village of Digomi, Georgia. Studied in cleric seminary. In 1878-1883, was an actor, then served in Transcaucasian Railroad (until 1899). In the last years of his life, was a director at Tbilisi People's Theater. Was one of the best representatives of realistic drama, authored popular common-people comedies The Times Are Different Now (staged in 1879, published in 1884), Khanuma (staged in 1882, published in 1884), Tsimbireli (1886), What You Have Brought You Will Carry Away (staged in 1902), and others. Was a master of a sharp dialog and comic situations.

Died August 12 (25), 1902, in Tiflis.
