Mokok residents demand compensation for burned houses

On the anniversary of the fire in the Dagestani village of Mokok, about 200 fire victims came to a protest action. According to them, each fire victim got from the authorities only 5000 roubles of compensation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 21, 2016, 480 people, including 190 children, lost their housing as a result of the fire in the Mokok village. On January 7, residents of Mokok said they no longer hoped for compensation in connection with the loss of property, since not all the fire victims were included in the lists of people affected by the fire.

In January, the Dagestan Prosecutor's Office began checking the legality of the exclusion of the Mokok residents from the list of the fire victims. No information is yet available concerning the results of the inspection.

"The local district administration tried to dissuade us from going to the rally. They even threatened us to bring us to justice for an unsanctioned gathering. However, the people have been waiting for a whole year, and we were tired of waiting," said Magomed Saidov, the head of the initiative group of villagers.

In the resolution adopted following the rally results, the fire victims demanded to provide them within a week with the detailed information about the situation related to the payment of compensation.

Otherwise, they will hold new protests, including hunger strikes and rallies in Makhachkala and Moscow in front of the State Duma.

On June 20, Dagestani leader Ramazan Abdulatipov stated that "there is no Mokok village in the official documents at all." According to him, now the people "should make titanic efforts to get compensation," the RIA "Derbent" reports.
