In Makhachkala, locals disrupt action in support of building Orthodox temple

On August 18, the Dagestani Centre for Russian Language and Culture under the Republican Ministry for National Police organized an action in support of the construction of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Ak-Gol Park after a group of Makhachkala residents had challenged the construction in court.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 18, 2016, it became known that the authorities of Makhachkala had allocated one hectare of land in the park zone of the Reduktorny town for the construction of a new Orthodox cathedral.

At the action, initiated by the Dagestani Centre for Russian Language and Culture under the Republican Ministry for National Policy, officials expressed gratitude to the Moscow Patriarch, the Makhachkala Bishop, the leader of Dagestan, and the Mayor of Makhachkala for implementing the idea to build a cathedral, reported the website of the Makhachkala administration.

The event took place in the Makhachkala House of Friendship on August 18, the RIA "Dagestan" reports with reference to the Ministry of Dagestan.

According to the website "Kavkaz.Realii", a group of Makhachkala residents managed to disrupt the action in support of the construction, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on August 18. Protesters, most of whom were Orthodox believers, stated that the construction of the cathedral should be conducted in another place, rather than in the Ak-Gol Park, which, on the contrary, needed landscaping. The event ended in a quarrel, the "Kavkaz.Realii" reports.
