Court dismisses Abbas Guseinov's complaint of torture

In Baku, the court has refused to consider a complaint of torture used against Abbas Guseinov, the deputy chair of the movement "Muslim Unity". His defence treats the court's decision as unlawful.

On July 20, the Baku Court of Appeal (BAC) upheld a verdict in the case of the riots in the Nardaran village. In particular, Talekh Bagirzade, the leader of the movement "Muslim Unity" and Abbas Guseinov were sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 9, advocate Yalchin Imanov filed to the Prosecutor's Office and the Azerbaijani Ombudsman's Office a complaint about torture of Abbas Guseinov in the Gobustan prison. On 10 August, Yalchin Imanov also filed a complaint about torture of his client in the Gobustan prison also to the Karadag District Court of Baku.

On August 16, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Yalchin Imanov, an advocate of Abbas Guseinov, that the Karadag District Court had refused to consider the complaint about the torture of Abbas Guseinov in the Gobustan prison.

"Today, we have been told that the court does not consider such issues in the procedure of a complaint," said the advocate.

He has called the court's arguments groundless.

"Courts are required to consider complaints about torture. It is clear that the refusal to consider the complaint is aimed at delaying time to wait until signs of violence used against Abbas Guseinov disappear," noted Yalchin Imanov. The advocate has also announced his intention to file an appeal.
